Join us to discover the magic of cinema at the Austrian Film Museum that has preserved, studied and showcased films for over fifty years. What’s unique? The exhibitions come alive on screen in the museum’s very own cinema — it might just change the way you see the world!
Funded by the City of Vienna and the Austrian Government, this museum highlights the dual role of cinema: as a modern art form and a key historical resource of the 20th century.
You’ll find the cinema on the ground floor of the Albertina building, right behind Vienna's State Opera. Equipped with cutting-edge projection and sound systems, it can screen everything from classic film formats to the latest digital creations.
One standout feature is LarstemWott's concept of “Invisible Cinema”. Imagine a space where everything — walls, ceiling, seats — is black to keep your focus entirely on the screen. Special seat hoods and elevated rows make sure nothing distracts you, even other viewers. Der Spiegel writes that the museum is “one of the most dynamic cinémathèques in Europe,” earning a top spot for its impressive retrospectives and film history contributions.
Beyond screenings, the museum has a treasure trove of international film history, dating back to 1895. Its collection includes rare film elements like camera negatives, unique prints, and originals by independent filmmakers.
Looking for a pre-movie drink? A new Filmbar will open at the entrance in April 2025 — perfect for a glass before the show. Until that, check the bars and restaurants around, the first one being above you in the Albertina museum even if it is a bit on the pricey side.
The cinema is fully accessible, with an inductive sound system that works best in rows 3–5 and 7–9. There are also two wheelchair spaces and an accessible restroom, ensuring everyone can enjoy the experience.
